Today we want to tell you why cardboard is the main protagonist in the world of logistics and packaging. Its popularity is well founded on the benefits it brings to growers around the world and end consumers.
We will start by explaining what this material is made of: Corrugated cardboard is created from the superposition of flat layers of Liner Kraft paper and waves of paper called middle corrugated. From the latter, its name and many of its properties are derived, such as strength, protection and design, as well as flexibility and dynamism.
The main raw material to manufacture corrugated is Paper, which comes from two main sources: Virgin Fiber or Recycled Fiber. The virgin fiber comes from the wood of cultivated pine and eucalyptus forests. The recycled fiber comes from the unpacking cardboard that we collect from different sources such as industries, commerce and recycling warehouses.
At the Papelsa’s mill 100% recycled material is used to manufacture our papers, being large consumers in the country of recycled fiber with more than 115 thousand tons per year.
Now we present some of the advantages that could be taken into account when betting on this type of packaging material:
- Environmental impact: it is one of the materials with the least environmental impact. The manufacture of cardboard represents a reduction of up to 60% in CO2 emissions, it is 100% recyclable and biodegradable; it needs 90% less water and 50% less electricity to make it when compared to other materials such as plastic (Source https://www.bbva.com/es/pe/sustainability). It allows to have a circular economy, its main advantage is that it can be used over and over again and it is considered one of the best recyclable resources.
- Lightweight, protects items and absorbs shocks: It is a lightweight material, but manufactured in such a way that it offers high resistance to the weight of the products it will contain, guaranteeing its protection from the packaging site to the final destination. For example, there are die-cut box designs for agricultural exports that ensure the arrival of delicate agricultural products to the final consumer in perfect condition.
- Excellent value for money, accessible to all types of industry or product.
- Optimizes the packaging space since they are packages designed according to the measurements of the product and seeking greater efficiency throughout the logistics chain (in pallets and containers).
- Allows the identification of the products and the positioning of the brand through the packaging. This issue becomes more important when the packages are used at the point of sale or for e-commerce seeking a memorable unboxing experience for the consumer
- Flexibility: Some types of cardboard are incredibly stiff and strong to protect what they are packing, while other varieties of cardboard can be wrapped around the product so the material doesn’t go to waste and the package isn’t bulky or difficult to ship or ship. to stock.
